Illustration
In response to the incident in Udupi, Karnataka, where Muslim students were barred from attending college while wearing hijabs, I created two illustrations challenging the state’s stance that hijab is not an “essential religious practice.” One of the illustrations, which drew visual parallels between Hindu and Muslim clothing traditions, went viral across India and sparked intense dialogue online. While the artwork gained widespread attention, it also made me the target of rape threats and harassment from right-wing extremists.
The post’s impact led to an interview and feature by The New Indian Express, highlighting the role of design in shaping public discourse and resisting oppression. This project explores how illustration can become a tool for political critique, cultural solidarity, and protest.
